Garcia sets sights on Europe for Roma

New Roma manager Rudi Garcia plans to lead the club back into European competition and get the better of rivals Lazio.

The Frenchman comes into the Stadio Olimpico after interim manager Aurelio Andreazzoli was sacked for his failure to get the Serie A side into Europe, shortly after coach Zdenek Zeman was also shown the door.

And Garcia has revealed he cannot wait to get going and will immerse himself with life in the Italian capital.

I don t speak Italian yet, but I understand almost everything, as I speak Spanish, he told Gazetta dello Sport.

I know it is very important to express yourself in the home language for various reasons. You ll see that I will be fluent soon.

As I said at my presentation in New York, I am a faithful person. I ho…

Kante and David Luiz doubtful for Chelsea´s clash with Middlesbrough

N Golo Kante and David Luiz are fitness doubts for Chelsea s pivotal home Premier League match against Middlesbrough on Monday.

Chelsea need three wins from their last four games to be certain of winning the title in Antonio Conte s first season in charge at Stamford Bridge.

But they could be without two key performers in midfielder Kante, who has only missed one top-flight match all season, and defender David Luiz against Boro.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, though, is fit to play having hurt his ankle in the win over Everton last time out, the same game that saw an injured David Luiz have to come off late on.

This week we are struggling with two situations about David Luiz and N Golo, Conte said at his pre-match media conference.

I think there a…

Lucescu would not block Teixeira transfer

Shakhtar Donetsk coach Mircea Lucescu would sanction a transfer for Alex Teixeira, but insists the club have received no offers for the midfielder.

Teixeira has been linked with a move from the Ukrainian Premier League leaders to Premier League side Chelsea.

The 26-year-old has been at Shakhtar since 2010 and has helped the club to five league titles and three Ukrainian Cup successes.

And Lucescu told Shakhtar s official website: Teixeira and I are talked a lot in the press now. They are spreading rumours about us allegedly leaving Shakhtar. At the moment, Alex is Shakhtar s player.

We ll see in the summer; [for] now there s no point talking about it. This year, he needs to play so that he grows even more, despite the fact that Alex s level is very hi…

Grealish linked with Aston Villa exit

Aston Villa could be set to sell Jack Grealish as they look to avoid Financial Fair Play sanctions, according to the Mail Online.

The news comes just a day after it was reported that John Terry will leave the club and while that will save them £6m, further action is needed as they look to block a £45m black hole.

Everton, Leicester City and West Ham United have all been linked with Grealish, who last season passed one hundred professional appearances for the Midlands club.

In total, the twenty-two-year-old has played one hundred and nine times in all competitions for Villa, scoring nine times while he had a successful loan spell with Notts County early on in his career.

He was named Aston Villa’s Player of the Season for the 2014/15 campaign – …

Copa Libertadores Review: Mineiro and Palmeiras eliminated

It was a day of upsets as Atletico Mineiro and Palmeiras failed to qualify for the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals, while Gremio advanced.

Mineiro played out a goalless draw against Wilstermann in Belo Horizonte on Wednesday but crashed out 1-0 on aggregate.

Trailing the Bolivians 1-0 following last month s first leg, 2013 champions Mineiro tried to erase the deficit but Robinho s men were unsuccessful at Estadio Governador Magalhaes Pinto.

Wilstermann will face Argentina s River Plate in the last eight, scheduled for next month.

Fellow Brazilian side Palmeiras suffered the same fate in the last 16, albeit 5-4 on penalties against Barcelona.

Palmeiras triumphed 1-0 in the second leg thanks to substitute Moises 51st-minute strike.

Sanchez, Pogba, Neymar, Eriksen – the transfer sagas ongoing ahead of September 2 deadline

PAUL POGBA

Pogba was United s top scorer in the Premier League last term but his season ended with a confrontation with supporters after the final game of the campaign, a home loss to Cardiff City. The Frenchman confirmed in June he was seeking a new challenge but is yet to get a move away. Pogba, who was targeted by racist abuse after failing to convert a penalty in a draw at Wolves last Monday, is reportedly wanted at Madrid by Zinedine Zidane. But time is running out to do that deal, especially as United are unable to secure a replacement as the Premier League s window has already closed.

My ancestors and my parents suffered for my generation to be free today, to work, to take the bus, to play football. Racist insults are ignorance and can only make me stronger and m…

Tuchel celebrates as PSG return to Champions League quarter-finals

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Thomas Tuchel revelled in his team s triumph against Borussia Dortmund as the Ligue 1 giants reached the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in four years.

Not since 2016 had PSG advanced to the quarters but the French champions ended their last-16 hoodoo by seeing off Dortmund 2-0 in a behind-closed-doors clash amid coronavirus fears in Paris.

Neymar and Juan Bernat scored in the first half as PSG overturned a 2-1 first-leg deficit at Parc des Princes, where Dortmund finished with 10 men following Emre Can s late red card.

Afterwards, Tuchel told reporters: It was really amazing in the bus [pre-game]. It was strong. It gave us an atmosphere in the bus, with a lot of confidence, a lot of joy.

After, the team …

Gerard Moreno the key to revenge for Unai Emery and Villarreal against Arsenal

If there was one man Villarreal could rely on, it was him. If there was one man they wanted standing over that penalty, it was him. If there was one man in their squad born for such a situation, it was him.

It is April 25, 2006, the kind of night the Valencian city of Vila-Real has seen few of. It s playing host to a Champions League semi-final just eight years on from seeing its team, Villarreal, earn their first promotion to LaLiga.

Having lost the first leg of the semi 1-0 to Arsenal in London, they have so far failed to find a way to level the tie, despite laying siege to the Gunners goal.

But with time almost up, they have the perfect opportunity to seize the initiative as a marginal call goes their way: Gael Clichy is deemed, somewhat harshly, to have fou…

Pochettino feels Spurs´ thrashing of Palace proves squad had lost focus

Mauricio Pochettino believes Tottenham s 4-0 thumping of Crystal Palace was proof his squad were previously unsettled .

Spurs made an unconvincing start to the season prior to the international break but put on a show at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.

Son Heung-min scored twice, either side of an own goal from Patrick van Aanholt, and Erik Lamela rounded off the rout before the break.

Pochettino issued a rallying cry to his team when addressing the media earlier this week, after close-season disruption that saw Christian Eriksen, Danny Rose, Victor Wanyama, Serge Aurier and Danny Rose all linked with moves and rumblings over the futures of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen.

However, the European transfer window passed with none of the su…
