Lukaku, Juventus reports no surprise to Martinez

Roberto Martinez is unsurprised by reports linking striker Romelu Lukaku to Juventus after an explosive start to life on loan at Everton.

Stories in the UK press claimed on Thursday that the reigning Serie A champions are hoping to take advantage of uncertainty over the Belgian s long-term future at parent club Chelsea with a move at the end of the season.

Lukaku has made 15 goalless appearances for Chelsea since his move from Anderlecht in August 2011 for a fee of around £20million, but he enjoyed a fruitful campaign on loan with West Brom last season, notching 17 goals in 38 games.

The Belgium international moved to Goodison Park on a similar deal on transfer deadline day and has made a strong start to life on Merseyside, with three goals from two games including a double in an impressive home debut against Newcastle United on Monday.

Martinez has no doubts over the 20-year-old s ability to operate at a high level, but he is keen to ensure that the player remains focused on his duties at Everton.

That s the first time I ve heard it, Martinez said when asked about the reports. But it doesn t surprise me. I think what matters is that he is enjoying his football.

I thought his away debut (against West Ham) was impressive. I thought the home debut was exciting to watch.

From the warm-up, you could see the warmth towards him from the fans, and that would have made a massive difference to how Rom was feeling at the start of the game.

His understanding and relationship with the players around him was very pleasing.

But it s only the start. He’s still a very young man and we’re really looking forward to seeing him go from strength to strength.
